ALG’s Shilpa Margaret Kurian Serves As A Judge At The 6th Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad National Moot Court Competition 2022

ALG’s Shilpa Margaret Kurian recently served as a judge at the Preliminary and Quarter-Final rounds for the 6th Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad National Moot Court Competition 2022 organized by the Moot Court Association of Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad. The event saw the participation of 24 teams from across the country, after qualification from the memorial round. The oral rounds saw detailed legal arguments by the participants on issues revolving around data privacy and constitutional laws, and concluded with the top 4 teams qualifying for the Semi-Final round.

A ‘Legal Issues Seminar-General IP’ (LIS-GIP) was conducted by Shilpa Margaret Kurian, Associate, on “Can User’s Consent be Deemed as Informed Consent to Share Personal Information?”. The seminar explored concepts of consent, informed consent, informational privacy, and the right to privacy under Article 21 enshrined in the Constitution of India, 1950. The discussion revolved around the nuances of the legal issue by relying on relevant legal provisions under the IT Act, 2000 and IT Rules, 2011 as well as on judicial decisions. The session concluded with interesting questions on the need for informed consent versus consent, the manner in which it may be obtained, and probable guidelines in light of the current framework.

Legal Issues Seminar-General IP (LIS-GIP) On “Whether Search And Seizure In Trademark Infringement Without The Registrar’s Opinion Is Permissible?”

A ‘Legal Issues Seminar – General IP’ (LIS-GIP) was conducted by Abhilasha Rathore, Associate, on “Whether Search and Seizure in Trademark Infringement Without the Registrar’s Opinion is Permissible?”. The seminar delved into the relevant provisions of the Trade Marks Act, 1999, and the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973. In particular, and in light of relevant judgments, the discussion revolved around the proviso to Section 115(4) of the Trade Marks Act, 1999, and its application in respect to Section 93 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973. The session concluded with intriguing questions from the team on the effectiveness of criminal remedies versus civil remedies in trademark infringement cases, as well as practical impediments of obtaining the opinion of Registrar of Trade Marks.

ALG’s Samreen Iboo Sait recently spoke at the Women’s Day celebration hosted by the Lions Club of Nilgiris. The event was organized by the ladies of the Club to celebrate, recognize and acknowledge the achievements of women in all spheres of life. Keeping in line with the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day – #BreakTheBias, Samreen hosted an activity intended to acknowledge the unconscious gender biases that can cloud decision making in one’s every day life. This was followed by a discussion on how the first step towards breaking the bias is to acknowledge privilege and then take suitable action.
