India’s first copyright guide for Indian libraries released for public consultation

The National Digital Library of India has released the draft of India’s first Copyright Guide for Indian Libraries for public consultation. The deadline for submitting comments/feedback is September 30, 2020.

Government holds discussion with e-commerce platforms for listing of GI registered products

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has reportedly held a meeting this week with major e-commerce companies, including Flipkart, Amazon, Snapdeal, Pepperfry, Paytm Mall, etc. to discuss listing of GI (Geographic Indication) registered  products on their platforms. The Government is contemplating on making GI tagging and display of logo mandatory for listing of GI registered products on e-commerce platforms. It has also sought the advice of e-commerce companies on creating a separate category for these products on their platforms.

China grants patent to COVID-19 vaccine

China has granted a patent to CanSino Biologics Inc. for its COVID-19 vaccine candidate – Ad5-nCOV. The patent application was filed on March 18, 2020 and the patent was granted on August 11, 2020. Reportedly, Phase II trials of the vaccine have been completed and CanSino is in talks with Russia, Brazil and Chile to launch Phase III trials.

Physical functioning of the Delhi High Court further suspended until August 31, 2020

The High Court of Delhi has notified that its physical functioning will remain suspended until August 31, 2020. The Court has clarified that it will continue to hear urgent matters through video conferencing.

The Court has further stated that subject to complete availability of public transport and the COVID-19 situation in Delhi remaining stable, it plans to resume physical functioning of one-fourth of its strength on a rotational basis from September 1, 2020 onwards.

WIPO and Music Rights Awareness Foundation announce collaboration to help creators

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Music Rights Awareness Foundation (MRAF) have announced a collaboration for supporting creators around the world to ensure that they are recognized and fairly remunerated for their work by increasing knowledge and awareness of their intellectual property (IP) rights.

To achieve these purposes, the consortium will be engaged in: (i) organizing conferences, seminars and programs to raise awareness of creators’ rights; (ii) producing and managing an online platform including educational videos to inspire, raise awareness and increase knowledge of creators’ rights; (iii) supporting the development and/or the promotion of services and IT solutions regarding creators’ rights (such as systems of identifier assignment, and documentation of works, performances and recordings); (iv) sharing of any relevant intellectual property information and documentation, subject to confidentiality requirements as appropriate; and (v) cooperating on specific projects and initiatives aimed at achieving the purposes of the consortium, including by supporting global and local initiatives to enable more individuals and collaborations around the world to make a living on their creations.
