Ministry Of Commerce Proposes Mandatory Online Payment Of Copyright License Fees

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry released a draft notification proposing amendments to the Copyright Rules, 2013, on June 4, 2025. The amendment introduces Rule 83(A), mandating that owners or licensors of literary works, musical works, and sound recordings establish and maintain an exclusive online payment mechanism for collecting license fees for communication to the public. This move aims to streamline and digitize the process, enhancing efficiency and accessibility for creators across India.

‘Silk Banarasi’ Secures Trademark Registration To Safeguard Authenticity

The Uttar Pradesh State Sericulture Cooperative Federation has secured trademark registration for ‘Silk Banarasi’ to promote authentic handloom-woven silk sarees from Varanasi and nearby regions. The initiative includes a marketing portal, showrooms in major cities, and certification from the Central Silk Board. Each product will feature a QR code linking to a video of its weaving process, ensuring quality, transparency, and boosting global recognition of Banarasi silk.

India Forms Expert Panel To Review AI Impact On Copyright Law

India has established an eight-member expert panel to assess whether the Copyright Act of 1957 sufficiently addresses legal challenges posed by artificial intelligence. Set up by the commerce ministry, the panel includes IP lawyers, government officials, and industry leaders. It aims to analyze AI-related copyright issues and recommend policy changes. This move comes amid global scrutiny, including lawsuits against AI firms like OpenAI over the use of copyrighted material.

Stakeholder Meetings To Be Held By IPO In Kolkata And Chennai For Draft Guidelines For Computer Related Inventions

The Office of the CGPDTM issued a public notice regarding stakeholder meetings to discuss the representations received on the Draft Guidelines for Computer Related Inventions. The first meeting will be held in Kolkata on May 21, 2025 at 4:30 PM at Bouddhik Sampada Bhawan, CP-2 Sector V, Salt Lake City. The second meeting will be held in Chennai on May 28, 2025 at 12 PM at Bouddhik Sampada Bhawan, G.S.T. Road, Guindy. The participants must confirm their attendance by sending an email to cgoffice.in@gov.in.

Cgpdtm Introduces New Copyright Registration Certificate Format And Secure Online Filing

To mark World Copyright Day 2025, the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) introduced key updates in the copyright filing process to make it more transparent, efficient and secure. The updates included new formats for Copyright Registration Certificate, Application and Registration numbers along with multi-factor authentication (OTP-based login) for secure filings.
